As its apprenticeship week let’s look at a local family run business which has benefited from their staff and owners from doing apprenticeships.
Karen has been the proud owner of Upper Crust Café in Charles Street Milford Haven since 2018. Prior to her ownership Karen managed the café for a number of years and since commencing her own Management Apprenticeship in 2017 has actively encouraged her staff to enrol for relevant routes from our full range of Hospitality qualifications including:
Hospitality Services
Food Production and Cooking
Food and Beverage Service
Hospitality Supervision & Leadership
Karen and the team have also completed their Food Safety Level 2 through PRP Training as part of their learning programmes and ongoing professional development.
Karen Trice (Owner)
“I have seen the staff grown in confidence as they are achieving new qualifications and skills. Some of the staff haven’t done any learning since they have left school which for some of them was nearly 20 years ago. It’s great that the course is open to all ages.
PRP Training have been easy to work with as they are consistently flexible by working around personal circumstances. For example, some of our team have young families so the flexibility offered through their training has been perfect for those with busy personal lives. The assessors, Dee and Jamie are always very friendly, polite and supportive, and are always on hand to help whether it be via text message or email.”
Kathryn (staff Member)
“I’m enjoying doing the NVQ and I have seen improvements in my own personal skills. It has also helped to develop my knowledge through doing the course and I’m looking forward to progressing to a Higher Apprenticeship following my level 3 qualification. The assessments have been so easy, the assessor watched me work and took photos and videos as evidence. My portfolio is now online so I can see my progress at any time.”
Tanya (Staff Member)
“Very straight forward to do! My assessor from PRP arranged to meet me, assessed me and supported me all while I was in work which has been perfect for me as I have a young family. Since doing the course I have grown in confidence and I have also been able to help others who are following the qualification.”
Assessor comment:
“It’s been a pleasure working with the café as Karen, the owner is very supportive and wants to see her staff develop. She has also seen the direct benefits of her team completing qualifications. The café offers a fresh selection of homemade sandwich fillings, scotch eggs, salad bar, freshly baked cakes and scones. In addition to this the menu has plenty of options from breakfasts and soup of the day, along with traditional British lunches (fish & chips, pie & chips to a ploughman’s lunch). Therefore, it’s straightforward to gather the evidence required for the staff to achieve their qualifications as it’s all naturally occurring through their job roles. It gives real job satisfaction when you see people grow and enhance their skills and knowledge, as well as building self-confidence. All of this is evident within the team at Upper Crust, and they all make great effort to support one another while working towards their qualifications.”
